Breath Rate Monitoring Using Dielectric Resonator Antennas

Abstract

A novel dielectric resonator antenna-based structure is proposed for respiration rate monitoring, one that can be seamlessly incorporated into clothing buttons for wearable medical technology. This wireless, real-time breath rate monitoring system operates by transforming changes in the relative permittivity of the human lungs to a shift in resonance frequency of the antenna throughout a complete respiration cycle. A nearby reader interrogates the sensor, extracts information, and sends the recorded data to the user or medical personnel. This sensor occupies an area of 30×30×4 mm3, demonstrating a compact system compared with other breath rate monitoring sensors documented in the literature.
