Abstract
This research aims to support informed decision-making by quantifying the impact of multimodal transportation on the eco-efficiency of waste transportation networks, focusing on various transportation strategies. This study integrates maritime and road transport within the waste management system to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs. A mathematical modeling approach, specifically a linear programming model, is employed to optimize waste transportation from collection points to recycling facilities. Using real-world data from a case study in Quebec province (Canada), our numerical analysis shows that a multimodal approach (road and maritime) can reduce transportation costs by 14% and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 27%. Incorporating external transportation costs leads to a 31% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions and a 13% reduction in expenses compared to the current scenario.
