Abstract

The present chapter provides a synthesis of the research activity of RILEM TC 264-RAP Task Group 1 (Cold Recycling). This chapter is divided into 10 sections. First, an abstract is provided. Then, a brief introduction (Sect. 2.1) on quality control of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) followed by the research objective and the approach used for the experimental activities. The main focus is on a better understanding of the impact of different aspects related to cold recycled material (CRM) mix design on their properties. The following section is dedicated to a literature review of the work done on CRM around the world, which is focused on the definition of CRM, on the mix design and on the laboratory procedures. Section 2.4 highlights the concepts of the volumetric approach applied to CRM while Sects. 2.5 and 2.6 report the experimental work results and the performed analysis with a qualitatively and quantitatively discussion on the outcomes. The conclusions of the research effort are finally summarized afterwards. Overall, the experimental activity and the analysis performed to support the idea of a volumetric approach proposed by Task Group 1 to quantify constituent proportions of the CRM based on the same concept already used for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures.
