Examining Certification Challenges for Pre-Existing Software-Defined Radio in Safety-Critical Avionics Applications

Résumé

In this paper, we took a pre-existing in-house software-defined Instrument Landing System (ILS) application (including localizer and glide slope) as a selected target to perform the certification processes. They were previously designed and developed independently by another team by using a model-based methodology (Simulink/Matlab). Consequently, the safety evidence was missing since the certification aspects were initially not considered. A workflow is proposed within the certification standard DO-178C, and some tools and methods were integrated to improve the efficiency of requirements management, checking of a standard for automated coding, automated unit and integration testing, and validation.
