N2 - The Internet of Things (IoT) is not a technology, but a system concept that incorporates multiple technologies. These include, for instance, cloud computing, distributed computing, Big Data, AI and digital twins. IoT systems are by nature data intensive, network centric and distributed. Some are cyberphysical in nature. The IoT is also an enabler of what is commonly referred to as 'smart everything'. This paper describes the strategic approach taken by ISO/IEC JTC 1 Subcommittee 41 (SC41) in IoT standardization since its creation more than five years. This strategy puts an emphasis on the development of foundational standards and collaborative work with both developers of some technology standards and stakeholders in sectors where the IoT enables 'smartness'.
