Abstract

We demonstrate the first interferometric refractive index sensor based on a freeform bimodal mode converter (BiMC) on a silicon nitride platform. The inverse-designed BiMC achieves a record transmission extinction ratio of -16.8 dB through balanced power distribution between the TEoo and TE 03 modes.
