Abstract

Green roofs represent a technological solution to energy efficient buildings. Although several quantitative studies hâve been performed around the world, the widespread implementation of green roofs in Canada is slowed in part by the lack of technical data relative to the Canadian environmental context. This study is about the analysis of the energy efficiency of an extensive green roof installed on an expérimental platform located in the city of Montreal, QC, Canada. The green roof comprises an irrigated zone, a dry zone and a reference zone. This research focuses particularly on the capahility of green roofs to increase the lifetime of the roof membrane and to reduce the cooling and heating load required to keep stable température conditions Inside the building. The Montreal green roof shows an efficient reduction of the maximum température reached by the membrane (reduction of 25% and 27% for dry and irrigated roofs) as well as a stabilisation of this température fluctuation (reduction of 66% and 77%). Moreover, the green roof induces a dramatic réduction of the beat entering the building through the roof (91 % and 99%) which implies great savings in cooling loads. Lower savings are recorded for beat loss (27% and 38%) with équivalent energy savings. Results presented in this study are comparable to those of other Canadian experimental platforms and particularly with the city of Ottawa and Toronto.
