Abstract

In Quebec, the status of the post-consumption glass valorization, coming from the municipal collection, is in decline. Since 2012, an increase of 14 % of this material is going to waste disposal site and use as backfill. One of the main avenue for post-consumption glass valorization is in the construction industry. The LCMB at ÉTS is studying possible avenues for the incorporation of the recycled glass aggregate at various levels in the composition of road structure. The mechanical and hydraulic performances of the post-consumption glass aggregate are well documented, whereas its behavior in frost conditions has been the object of few studies. The incorporation of post-consumption glass in road structure, located in cold region, requires an analysis of the frost heave response. The main objective of this research project is to compare the behavior of post-consumption glass and limestone under the effects of frost as a base course and as frost protection applications. This comparison is made by means of experimental tests based on the principle of the segregation potential for the frost heave characterization of the granular materials found in road structure and natural soils. The evaluation of the frost heave sensitivity of the granular materials in this study is determined in a saturated state witch reflects the most critical conditions in frost condition. The coarse granular material used in this studied is the fraction passing the 5mm sieve. The experimental results show the decrease of the sensibility of the frost heave according to the increase of the porosity of the granular material. The frost protection systems studied are the thermal barrier and the capillary barrier where is studied the influence of the granular nature. The experimental results show that in spite of the low influence of the thermal barrier the frost, the VPC performs better to reduce the effects of the frost heave. The capillary barrier of VPC remains the configuration offering the best protection against frost heave. The analysis is mainly concentrated on frost susceptibility criteria connected to the segregation potential such as frost heave, the thermal gradient, the average suction of freezing fringe and the moisture content profile. The observed tendency indicates that the post-consumption glass aggregate performs better in freezing conditions than limestone aggregate.
