Abstract

The industry has witnessed a revolutionary development in various sectors which has been accompanied by the development of power electronics to accommodate our lifestyle. Nevertheless, this development is double-edged because it results in an increase of the risk of generating different forms of anomalies that could threaten the power quality produced and circulating in the electrical network. Therefore, before thinking about developing and expanding a given electrical plant, it’s important to make sure that the given network already produces a good power quality not only by identifying the various parameters and equipment of the considered electrical plant but also by performing real time measurements in order to highlight the different aspects and characteristics of the power quality provided by the electrical network in question; it’s this logic that we have followed along the work presented in this thesis. Indeed, we began our work by identifying all kind of the equipment connected to the electrical network of ETS and by focusing on the transformers and their loads. Moreover, the data that has been collected from the following visit, was documented since it will be useful for the real-time measurements done by using a software designed by Schneider Electric called Vista Powerlogic interface and limited to the loads powered by transformers with nominal apparent power equal to 100kVA and above. Then, these data will also be used for the calculation of the impedance of the cables and transformers needed for the simulation with SimPowerSystems (SPS) of the electrical plant which has been updated thanks to the inventory carried out in the beginning of this study. Plus, in this simulation, we used the power profile data obtained with real time measurements with Vista. In addition, an analysis and interpretation of the results obtained earlier were made: on the one hand the results regarding the waveforms of load currents and voltages, their harmonic spectrum and their phase shift diagrams were discussed and led to conclude that the power quality circulating in the electrical network has various disturbances which mostly are the generation of a high rate harmonic currents and the unbalance of the charge currents which has led to the generation of the harmonics with multiple frequency mainly the rank 3 harmonic current. On the other hand, the results regarding the load power profile measured only across the loads supplied by the high-power transformers have led us to the conclusion that all these transformers are such oversized equipment which seems to be the result from the circulation of load harmonic currents among the network. Hence, it’s safe to say that this work was not only able to highlight the aspect of the power quality but also to develop a kind of a platform reflecting the real behavior of the electrical network of the whole campus and allowing to optimize any future development and expansion regarding the studied campus network.
