Engineering document verification and validation (V&V) processes must be adapted for building information modelling (BIM), as its incorporation of computer-based tools requires new ways of doing things. Our previous work found that some engineers are hesitant to validate their engineering documents because they find the contours and limits of the validation process seem vague and ambiguous. We therefore investigate in this study the sequence of events involved in engineering document V&V. The purpose of this project is to document the V&V processes used for construction engineering documents. This study contributes to identifying the limits and contours of V&V and thus laying the foundation for more in-depth research on the subject in the future. It seeks to define the terms verification and validation for construction, and identifies and analyzes various written sources that describe the sequence of events involved in engineering document V&V processes in the construction industry. The exploratory research method is used to be able to examine data from different types of documents (scientific documents, industry normes, professional practice guides) from a variety of sources as well as semi-structured interviews. A cross-analysis of the results is provided in the analysis and discussion section to give meaning to the results obtained.
The results reveal that little research has been conducted on engineering document V&V processes and that there exist inconsistencies in the definitions of V&V found in the scientific literature. Construction industry normes and OIQ recommendations regarding the sequence of events in V&V processes for engineering documents seem very generic. The engineers interviewed more or less agree on what is meant by "engineering document V&V." Threephase model checking is the V&V process used in BIM. However, "model checking" is not a defined concept in construction. Standard ISO 19650 2:2018 and the Canadian Practice Manual for BIM contain figures that outline control workflows but do not explain how to proceed. This research recommends examining ways to verify and validate engineering documents.
