The aim of this present thesis is to study the hemp and the coco fibers, and more precisely their elementary fibers. After each one of the elementary fibers has been characterized by it section and dimensions, they have been numerically modeled.
The SEM observations carried out on both fibers lead to the conclusion that there is a structural similarity between hemp and coco. Indeed, both fibers consist of several elementary fibers. This particularity was already known for the coco but this is an entirely new discovery when it comes to the hemp. The hem is a bast fiber plant (also called phloem or skin fiber) thus it shouldn’t be composed of elementary fibers. Nevertheless, its small dimensions caused the fibers to “stick” together so that they form a larger structure.
This being so, the fiber’s Young’s modulus has been studied through different numerical modelisations: the purpose was to identify its variations depending on the fiber’s dimensions and their chemical composition. The results obtained, helped to identify the parameters affecting the most the Young’s modulus, as for instance the fibrils layout inside the fiber’s wall or the inclination of those fibrils. On the other hand, it’s been deduced that the shape of the elementary fiber’s section, the lumen’s dimension or the fiber’s wall thickness have a limited impact on the Young’s modulus variations.
