Abstract

After a brief overview of the context of the research project, this thesis highlights the scientific concepts necessary to understand the phenomena involved in performing CFD calculations to simulate the formation of condensation trails. Thus, a state of the art focusing on condensation trail modelling presents the issues to be addressed. These issues take into account the dynamics controlling the dispersion of effluents in the wake of the aircraft, the chemical reactions taking place in the plume formed by aircraft emissions and finally the microphysical processes responsible for the formation of ice crystals constituting the drag of condensation. From a methodological point of view, the work carried out is based on an iterative method of adapting the mesh size in order to obtain optimal refinement. The objective is to solve physical phenomena with precision, on the one hand, and to reduce the cost of calculation, on the other hand. The results presented in this paper are based on three parametric studies: two of them varying a geometric parameter on the aircraft model studied, and another varying atmospheric conditions. These results highlight behaviors and trends in the formation of condensation trails.
