With the ever-growing popularity of wireless communications, we are seeing an important increase in demand for higher system capabilities and performances. When taking the world of cellular communications as an example, the main focus among other things is to increase the amount of data that can be sent in a given lapse of time. A part of the solution to that problem is to increase the amount of transmitting and receiving antenna, namely the Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology.
Within the framework of an industrial partnership with Ultra Electronics TCS, this research is interested about a particular scenario where a fixed transmission tower seeks to keep a Wireless communication with a remote unit. In more details, we want to analyze some aspects and benefits that MIMO technology could bring to the radios. Here, the goal is not about the gain in data capacity, but rather in the link’s communication distance. In other words, we refer to this as the range extension given to the system.
The obtained results not only show that MIMO technology increases the range of transmission, but that the higher the requirements on the system, or the worst the propagation conditions, the greater the benefit of MIMO.
