For several years, companies have shown benefits of economic and construction time of preventive work. These works serve to improve the condition of the roads while protecting the structure of the roadway from water infiltration and it is increasing the overall life of the road. The first mix-design methods of chip seal surface treatments made their appearance in the early 1930s with the Hanson method. With the new acknowledge of the bitumen emulsions, the deepening of knowledge of surface treatment materials and bituminous mastics has been the subject of a research project with the Laboratoire sur les Chaussées et matériaux Bitumineux (LCMB) in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB).
The objective of this research project is to evaluate the impact of the filler in bitumen emulsion mixtures for chip seal and developing a characterization method for bituminous mastics from bituminous mixtures with bitumen emulsion. The experimental tests of the first part of the project made it possible to measure the aggregates loss of different aggregate emulsion pairs of bitumen between two types of aggregates and two types of emulsion for surface treatments of type 3 (TS3). The second part of the project focuses on asphalt mastic and asphalt emulsion. DENT and DSR tests were performed on specimens and their characterization were performed in order to have the mechanical properties of bituminous mastics from bituminous materials to the emulsion.
