Nickel-based superalloys, such as Waspaloy, have found their places in different industries because of their special characteristics, particularly their good resistance to corrosion at high temperature. This thesis focuses on research to identify a dry, non-destructive method of inspection to reveal microstructural defects on a turbine disk sample machined from Waspaloy, a nickel-based superalloy. Intermetallic precipitates increase tensile strength, creep resistance, limit of elasticity and ultimate tensile strength of superalloy. However, microstructural anomalies such as freckles and white spots have negative effects on mechanical properties of nickel-based superalloys. This document presents a detailed study about the origin and the nature of freckles and white spots. Experimental works are mainly concentrated on the measurement of electrical conductivities by eddy-current and on ultrasonic measurements by surface acoustic waves (Rayleigh surface waves). To enrich the capacity of analysis, a study on Magneto-optic Imaging is also presented in this document. By controlling measurement parameters, the effectiveness of each technique is confirmed. This report gives satisfactory results that can be used as references for further researches.
