Évaluation et recommandations pour le développement des carrefours à sens giratoire au Québec

Abstract

This master thesis presents the status of roundabouts in Québec. It assesses two problematics, namely the non uniformity of developments and the prevalence of road users’ erratic behaviours. The goal of the thesis is ensuring the safe development of roundabouts in Québec. Forty-five roundabouts were identified; the census demonstrated the non uniformity of approaches, of pedestrian crosswalks, of treatments for bicycles, and of truck aprons. However, signalization is the most incongruous aspect. A disaggregated analysis of 25 developments reported 406 discrepancies on road signs. An analysis of users’ behaviours was fulfilled – an eight hour observation of 11 roundabouts – and noted the occurrence of an inappropriate behaviour every minutes. The most erratic behaviours (76%) are related the modern roundabout rule. A survey of 42 driving schools disclosed that 38% of respondents offer classroom training on roundabouts and 69%, hands-on training. A comparison of American, French and Quebecker driving manuals demonstrated that, contrary to French manuals, American and Quebecker manuals are neither complete, nor updated. The establishment of a round table and the update of the ministère des Transports du Québec’s design manual are recommended. It is proposed that a provincial awareness campaign be undertaken. Roundabouts should be an integral part of driving classes and exams, in order to educate population. It is also mandatory to increase information found in driving manuals and include roundabouts in the Code de la sécurité routière.
