Abstract

Heating and cooling load calculation is often performed independently of the BIM design process, that is, the information which is or may be available in the BIM model is not used as a data source. The main objective of this research project is to identify the possibilities of linking load calculation to the BIM design process. To do this, a comparison of three calculation tools, used in a BIM context, is completed by assessing three aspects: the load calculation results, the usability and information management as well as the ability to exchange information with the BIM platform. For this project, the BIM platform used is Autodesk's Revit and the tools are OpenStudio, which uses the EnergyPlus calculation engine, the load calculation tool integrated to Revit and a spreadsheet adapted from the Cooling Load Temperature Difference / Solar Cooling Load / Cooling Load Factor (CLTD / SCL / CLF) load calculation method of ASHRAE. The approach used to realize the load calculation in a BIM context is specific to each tool. The load calculation information requirements contained in the BIM platform are shared with the calculation tools, either using the gbXML exchange file for OpenStudio, by direct links for the load calculation tool integrated into Revit and using Autodesk’s Dynamo visual programming tool for the spreadsheet. The results of the comparison of the calculation tools used in a BIM context make it possibleto establish that: - OpenStudio, which uses the EnergyPlus calculation engine, provides detailed and flexible load calculation. It also allows for superior information management. - Revit, which uses the Radiant Time Series (RTS) load calculation method, is the most user-friendly tool and allows an optimal exchange of information with the BIM platform due to the use of direct links. - The flexibility of the spreadsheet, both for load calculation and for the exchange of information with the BIM platform, is one of its advantages. By comparing the tools, it was shown that heating and cooling load calculation in a BIM context is possible with the three tools. The tools provided comparable results and allowed the exchange of information with the BIM platform. The use of load calculation in a BIM context offers advantages for the industry which vary with the tool used.
