Abstract

The construction industry is known for its low productivity and inefficiency and many high potential solutions have been pushed forward to address those issues. The deployment of one of those solutions, the building information modelling (BIM), still need to be fully realized in Quebec. Classic innovation diffusion theories propose that the client is best positioned to enforce the adoption of an innovation like BIM. However, national mandates enforcing a BIM approach are still rare. This research aims at characterizing roles of industry assocations in BIM diffusion in markets that lacks national BIM initiatives. The secondary objective is to develop a model that could help benchmarks and compare industry associations’ actions regarding BIM diffusion towards their members. The model is adapted from an existing theoretical framework and with a literature review, focus groups and interviews and is afterwards tested in two markets. The first one is in Luxembourg, a small country in Western Europe which is in a transition towards a BIM mandate. The second market is in Quebec, a province of Canada where a recent mobilization in favor of a national mandate was initiated by a research lab. While the case studies conducted on these markets were used to test the adapted model, incidental observations revealed how major stakeholders can influence BIM diffusion on their markets.
