Abstract

Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) are two holistic digital mock-up-based approaches that support the construction and manufacturing industries respectively. The comparison between BIM and PLM has recently been the subject of various research studies that mention that this comparison can improve both approaches through cross-pollination. However, few research studies shed light on the comparison of IT tools adopted in these environments. Indeed, IT tools play a key role in the BIM and PLM approaches to facilitate the creation and sharing of technical documents and the process of their modification. Changes that impact published technical documents are common in industries where there are design activities, whether it's a building or mass-produced product like cars. These types of changes are known as design changes in the construction industry, while the term engineering changes is more commonly used in the discrete manufacturing sector. These changes can have a significant impact on the cost and schedule of a project. Therefore, a design/engineering change must be managed by a well-structured design/engineering change management (D/ECM) process supported by IT tools. This study compares the functionality offered by the IT tools adopted by four industrial partners from the construction, energy and aerospace sectors during their D/ECM processes. A total of 22 semi-structured interviews were conducted with the industrial partners to document their D/ECM processes and IT tools. In this study, the D/ECM processes of the industrial partners are first briefly presented. Then, the IT tools adopted for document control are identified and explored. Finally, the functionalities offered by these tools are compared showing their main similarities and differences. This study shows that the PLM tools presented in the case studies offer some advanced functionalities, especially with respect to revision management, impact analysis and workflow management.
