In Quebec, weather conditions greatly influence the performance of the road network. The Quebec, weather conditions greatly influence the performance of the road network. The temperature gradient experienced by a road in Quebec contributes to the deterioration of roadways. The expected increase in rainfall will decrease the lifespan of infrastructure and increase the probability of flooding. This increase explains the interest shown by several organizations in improving pavement performance under flood conditions. This report presents a review of the literature of the various failures that can reduce the performance of the roadway and its different layers in flood conditions and then propose solutions adapted to a Quebec context.
One of the effects of water on the pavement surface is the breaking of the bonds between the aggregates and the asphalt. Thus, water causes an acceleration of the degradation of the asphalt. By infiltrating the underlying bonded layers, this water also affects the bond between the layers. For granular layers, a high degree of saturation and low permeability generate an increase in interstitial pressure and a decrease in stiffness and strength of the material. The resilient module is influenced by the saturation level. Therefore, the water level influences the permanent deformations associated with rutting. For embankment embankments, the damage is mainly due to erosion and saturation.
These problems depend on the water discharges at the level of the pavement and this discharge comes from the speed of the flow. Thus, damage to pavements should be classified according to the speed and nature of the flow. In order to arrive at a submerged pavement proposal adapted to Quebec, several issues have arisen arising from the damage affecting several road networks. The proposal for a solution was passed first, by a presentation of the solutions used; their effects and efficiencies as a function of the flow velocity.
Then, two solutions tracks were proposed, a permeable solution track and a raincoat. Each of these solutions responds to a specific flow rate. These proposals were based on the introduced design approach and new concepts. The results of this report provide a better understanding of the issues related to pavement flooding. Nevertheless, the proposals made must be validated. A proposal for a validation method was given at the end of this report.
