Abstract

Energy Solutions Associates markets an air-to-air heat exchanger for the North American food industry. This equipment recovers heat in situations where the outside temperature is lower than inside. However, in summer the amount of energy released by birds during their growth becomes very large and enormous ventilation rates are required to keep temperatures bearable indoors. While with a latent heat of fusion of 334 kJ/kg, tons of snow stored in a reservoir throughout the winter could be used to lower the interior temperature and reduce ventilation rates to a lower level, allowing thus saving electricity and improving comfort for animals and workers. The study is focused on the sizing of a water air exchanger. The goal of this work is to produce a digital code that is used to size this heat exchanger under variable conditions to cool a broiler house located in Quebec. A bibliographical study of the various exchangers made it possible to choose the appropriate geometry allowing the maximum exchange. A crossflow finned tube bank heat exchanger was chosen. The design of the heat exchanger is based on the number of transfer unit method. Using MATLAB code, a parametric study is conducted to assess the effect of certain parameters on the optimal configuration. These effects are: air flow; water flow; the number of fins; thermal conductivity of tubes and fins and fouling. The volume of the heat exchanger is limited to 3.5m × 0.2m × 1.5m with a maximum capacity of 25 kW. The water passes through about twenty tubes with a circulation speed of around 1.5 m/s. The air circulates through the 110 fins with a volume flow of 0.85 m3/s. With the amount of condensed water is around 38 liters of water per hour. The study carried out with this water-air exchanger responds to a critical need in the cooling and dehumidification process in northern environments where temperature and humidity management is essential.
