Abstract

In an effort to reduce fuel consumption, Bombardier Aerospace studies morphing wing concepts. The goal is to change the wing shape during the flight to improve laminar flow and reduce drag. This technology consists in mechanically deform through actuators an upper surface wing section manufactured in composite material. The composite skin is designed flexible enough to be deformed and rigid enough to support aerodynamic loads in flight. This project requires a static test to check the resistance to a particular loading case corresponding to a flight in uniform rectilinear trajectory with full tanks. It is not a structural certification test required by the aerospace certification organizations but only one of its design checkpoint. To perform this static test, the wing is assembled on a self-test bench designed according to the criteria and specifications expected by the manufacturer. The bench design is divided into three parts. The first step is to identify clearly the internal wing loading to guide the bench design in order to reproduce this loading experimentally. After this identification, the overall bench structure dimensions are determined. The analytical sizing of standard components is done as the second step of the design and allows to size different elements such as beams, plates and welded joints. The numerical finite element analysis allows to size elements with more complex geometries and validates structure deformation, safety factors on the entire structure and bolted joints. Finally, the experimental static test validates the wing stiffness and its composite skin by applying the load but it also validates the finite element model of the bench and therefore its design. To conclude, the bench test design is validated because it is respect a safety factor imposed by Bombardier Aerospace.
