Abstract

Wavelength selective switches (WSS) cannot yet be deployed in the submerged branching units (BUs) of submarine cable line systems, which limits the flexibility of undersea optical networks. In this regard, the filterless network architecture, which is based on coherent transponders and passive optical splitters and combiners at nodes and has already been proposed for terrestrial applications, can be considered as a promising solution for submarine applications. In this thesis, filterless architectural solutions are proposed and evaluated for three submarine network topologies. The solutions are compared with conventional active photonic switching solutions based on WSS in terms of cost, wavelength consumption (Routing and Wavelength Assignment, RWA), and spectrum assignment (Routing and Spectrum Assignment, RSA). It is also shown that the filterless architecture can bring significant savings in terms of terminal equipment and spectrum consumption in submarine networks with time-varying traffic by dynamically adjusting the number of transceivers and the spectrum based on the traffic variations.
