We present the design and the characterization of a Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM), which will enable monitoring and resource management at the wavelength level in optical communications networks. ROADMs are key devices in agile optical networks. Ideally capable of switching any input wavelength to any output fiber, they allow a dynamic reconfiguration of the network capacity with wavelength granularity. Various ROADM architectures can be implemented, depending on the application requirements. We will describe a personalized architecture supporting all the channels of the C band and whose switching time is adjustable, in order to study the dynamic and transitory behaviors of an optical transmission system.
