In this document we present the development of an intelligent environment for human learning (EIAH) which assists students in achieving their laboratory through the assimilation of theoretical concepts with a database of examples. The EIAH is adaptive thanks to two intelligent agents. One agent is associated with the student and plays the role of tutor / companion. The other agent assists the teacher and allowed him to track each student. Our environment provides collaboration between through a discussion forum.
We used the MISA method and UML language for the design of our EIAH. As for development, we used the Java technology and the JESS inference engine for implementation of intelligent agents.
To justify the usefulness of such an environment and see its impact in terms of student learning, we had our system tested by students of a course in artificial intelligence offered at ÉTS. The results obtained are very encouraging and motivate us to continue our researches (60% of students found that the EIAH’s contribution to the comprehension and the achievement of their laboratories is important).
In conclusion, the design and development of an EIAH can be a tedious task due to the diversity of learning methods, evaluation methods and the implementation of this kind of environment. But ultimately it was an interesting and stimulating exercise. It allowed us to make different findings both in technology and in adaptive education.
This project can be viewed as a solution to one of the grand challenges in engineering: personalized learning that meets students’ reality.
