Road transport is a sector that concerns several authorities, at several levels. First, there are many road users: pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, motorists, bus and heavy vehicle drivers, etc. In order to ensure harmonious and safe sharing of the road, different users are required to respect the Road Safety Code and adopt voluntary actions promoting respectful driving. Despite this, there are many problems of cohabitation and road safety. Furthermore, heavy vehicles are involved in several accidents on the road, in particular because of their very large blind spots. In addition, road freight transport has a major impact on the environment. Several cities around the world have addressed this issue, but each city manages its urban logistics differently since the realities and priorities of the cities differ.
To analyze transportation in Montreal, you must first understand its passenger transportation offering as well as its freight transportation offering. Passenger transportation in Montreal is very varied. It is made up of a public transport system offering several means of travel currently present or in planning. With this offer, new forms of mobility are born, such as microtransit, Mobility as a Service (or integrated mobility) and connected, automated and autonomous vehicles. Transport planning takes place at several levels and current legislation may hinder the development of new forms of mobility. At the same time, automated and autonomous vehicles present an opportunity for the development of microtransit to offer integrated and complementary mobility.
On the other hand, the transport of goods is also experiencing developments and technological advances. Although the transport of goods by heavy vehicles presents many challenges, it remains essential to the development of cities and their economic vitality. It therefore becomes important to find solutions or means to maintain this transport, but to minimize its impact, especially in dense environments. A solution presents itself in the establishment of an urban distribution center. These different visions lead to further reflection: how to integrate the transport of people and the transport of goods? The main idea is to allow the movement of goods through existing infrastructure, while minimizing the impact of heavy vehicles. Simulations are carried out using the Monte Carlo method to prove the effectiveness of such a hypothesis.
