This master addresses the problem of optimal control. It consists of two parts and refers to two different complex and unreliable manufacturing systems. On one hand, the first part of this project focuses on the optimization of production and subcontracting control policies for a manufacturing system, representing a common problem in the pharmaceutical industry. It focuses on the development of a new control policy and parameters optimization targeting cost reduction, while fulfilling the constraint of customer satisfaction. On the other hand, a comparative study was conducted, focusing on the interaction between the production, the setup and the maintenance control policies. The introduction of the concept of the opportunistic maintenance in the studied models allows achieving even more cost savings and increasing the level of customer service. This concept permits a better synchronization of the preventive maintenance interventions with the setup actions, which requires discontinuation of production activity during a non-negligible period of time.
Due to the complexity of the considered manufacturing systems and the limitations of analytical models, we decided to use an experimental approach that combines statistical methods of optimization with simulation tool, in order to optimize the control parameters of each studied system. It integrates the design of experiment, the variance analysis, the methodology response surface and the simulation. The latter allows faithfully replicating the behavior of the manufacturing system under the actual operating conditions and this way estimating its characteristics. All simulation models are designed by combining an approach of discrete and continuous events, in order to take into account the continuity of the production flow and the impulsive nature of the system dynamics. Sensitivity analyzes are also made to confirm the relevance and the robustness of the selected approach.
