Abstract

The main objective of this research is to automatize the voltage regulation at the secondary level on Hydro-Québec’s power network. To do this, a coordinated secondary voltage control (CSVC) has been used. The principal steps to follow to implement a CSVC are the partitioning of the power network, the selection of pilot buses representative of the voltage profile of each control area and the implementation of the control. The present work tests some methodologies for each step. For the partitioning of the power network, the Fuzzy CMeans and the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) classification algorithms have been tested. For the pilot bus selection, a global search algorithm done with a genetic algorithm (GA) has been tested. For the CSVC implementation, this is done with a simple architecture that uses optimal power flows (OPF) in the control. The IEEE 39-bus, a modified IEEE 118-bus and the Hydro-Québec power networks have been used to validate the different studied methodologies. In sum, the basic principles of the CSVC with OPFs were functional. The main recommendations consist in improving the search of the pilot buses, in improving the discretization of shunt values and in adding in the control the capacity to take into account the reactive power produced on generators and to limit the voltage variations on them.
