The Integrated Design Process (IDP) is recognized to enhance the design of buildings with improved performance. This process encourages collaboration within the design team to develop synergistic and innovative solutions, including improved energy performance at lower cost. Nevertheless, it is observed in practice that professionals rely sparsely on the comparison of options resulting from the use of energy simulation tools for the selection of the most relevant solutions. In general, the use of energy simulation tools is limited to validating that the requirements of a sustainable building certification are meet at the end of the design. Yet technological advancement allows us to compare different options and develop better energy strategies from the early design phases.
To encourage the use of energy simulation tools within IDP, a framework for the use of energy simulation tools is proposed. This framework is based on both documented practices in the literature and observations of actual IDP projects. It defines a process that facilitates collaborative decision making, within an IDP, by using energy simulation to compare various options and scenarios. This proposed framework has also been implemented within a university course on IDP. This implementation has illustrated the potential of the proposed framework to assist the process of using energy simulation tools within IDP and thus improving the energy performance of buildings.
