This master's thesis is a first step of a major project proposed by Hydro-Québec to the Department of Electrical Engineering ETS. Its ultimate objective is to improve the management and to optimize the reactive power’s flow throughout the grid. Indeed, the optimization of reactive power flow in the grid might reduce losses and save on energy.
The modeling of the losses in the various components of the network in function of the reactive energy will consist of the first phase of the project. The components addressed in this undertaking are the salient pole synchronous machine, transformer and transmission lines.
This work’s main challenge is to model the losses in a salient pole synchronous machine while taking into consideration the magnetic saturation. For that purpose, a SIMULINK model is implemented based on previous studies. The proposed model is designed in order to comply with our aims having the total losses in function of the reactive power.
The results of the implemented model of losses of these three main components can be used in the regulation of the excitation current of the machine to produce / absorb reactive power resulting of minimal losses.
