The design of an energy-efficient building requires an evaluation of the different design options. Energy simulation has the potential to support the decisions of the architect, especially in early design stages where there is the greatest potential for optimization. However, the use of simulation tools, according to the current design practices, remains limited and is generally reserved for engineer during the design development phase. The literature suggests solutions to adapt simulation tools for the architectural process; however, little work has been completed to define the methods and processes to optimize the integration of this practice.
This research aims to develop an approach to integrate simulation tools early in the design process. The targeted area is architectural passive strategies used to achieve the performance objectives. Alongside this, key performance parameters to be considered in energy simulation are described. Relevant tools that are best suited for early design phases are also selected. Despite the issues identified in this approach, an optimization sequence is proposed to assist the architect and stimulate the adoption of such practice.
