The benefits of cycling as a means of transportation no longer need to be demonstrated and its promotion is identified as a priority of the Québec Public Health Program. Since cycling facilities are an effective way to encourage bicycle usage, it is important to continue the implementation of those facilities. However, many constraints hinder progress, including cost and space limitations.
Consequently, exploring the reallocation of existing infrastructures for the benefit of cyclists. Given the extensive freeway and expressway network in Canada and the United States, along with specific characteristics of those roads, in particular: the rarity of conflict points; their large horizontal and vertical curves; and their wide paved shoulders, the use of these shoulders by cyclists has a potential that should be explored.
The objective of this thesis is to formulate a method to assess the desirability of allowing cyclists to travel on the shoulder of expressways and freeways in rural and suburban areas and, if it is the case, to determine the mitigation measures to be taken.
