Abstract

This research aims to assess the impact of thermal storage on energy demand of institutional and commercial buildings in Quebec. A function is developed on MATLAB® to evaluate the impact ThermElect® storage devices on periodic demand profiles of buildings. Demand profiles measured from the Centech, and those from simulated buildings are used to evaluate the impact of ThermElect® on the electricity bill, aiming at a simple return on investment of 5 years. Annual economies are optimized iterating a fixed set point annually. The main source of heating of buildings has to be electricity. The response of the ThermElect® devices is deduced from empirical operating curves supplied by the manufacturer. This research also takes into account that Simeb® archetypes buildings demand profiles represent the reality of existing buildings. The price of devices and their installation cost are estimated. It is possible to achieve a return on investment of 5 years for most of the simulations performed. Depending on demand profiles, an arrangement of more than one device could achieve this objective. In the case of the Centech, one unit of 80 kW would be necessary for savings of about $6,000 per year, based on data from December 2009 to November 2010 with a set point fixed annually at 55 kW.
