Abstract

When designing a product, the process capability to meet engineering requirements is a very important aspect which allows designers to assure manufacturability and assembly of mechanical components. The major constraint to obtain a reliable estimation of process capability is this obligation to produce a certain amount of parts, and this even if parts of different geometries already have been manufactured. The known process capability for a given geometry becomes invalid for components with different geometries since the variation inherent to the process is affected. In this sense, this Master's thesis presents a methodology which allows the rapid evaluation of process capability for a new part by using historical data collected on parts manufactured by the same process, but with different geometries. An original concept, the geometric complexity, allows us to use the known process capability of a given geometry to estimate new process capabilities for different geometries of higher or lower complexity. Through a partnership with the company Nova Bus, we used this model to estimate the capability of a welding process to meet geometric tolerances of profile as defined by standard ASME Y14.5 (2009). The proposed model is validated through real case studies. A complementary study is used to demonstrate the applicability of the model in other frameworks, in this case, a machining process.
