Construction is an industry where the success of a project relies on an efficient information transfer between project stake-holders. The low productivity of the industry can be attributed partly to the fragmentation of project information. Besides, the industry is characterized by the oneness of the delivered products which implies that projects have to be managed and delivered by TPOs (Temporary Project Organizations) which will rarely persist beyond a single project.
While some technologies like CAD (Computer-Aided Design) have become widespread over the industry for over two decades and while some new technologies like BIM (Building Information Modeling) have become more and more prevalent in the recent years, the construction sites are the last part of the industry to take advantage of the new information technologies, and despite the fact that the construction site is where the most crucial information exchanges occur, paper forms are still the industry standard for the most part.
The evolution of mobile technologies over the past years is offering many areas for improvement for the field information management. Mainly, cloud services offer a wide array of tools for centralizing and sharing the project information and some innovative companies have already implemented many of these mobile solutions in their field practices.
This research paper presents the results of a one-year exploratory case study aiming to investigate the introduction and adoption of field technologies (FT) within construction organizations. This project explored the process of analyzing field technological solutions and conducting testing and piloting activities within an industrial context, in the early stages of an implementation project. The goal of this exploratory research is to learn about the deployment and the implementation of Field Technologies in the context of organizations.
