This research focuses on open innovation activities in a startup context. Can open innovation activities support the startup as it moves up to the expansion phase and avoid a premature transition?
In order to shed light on the subject, we have raised three hypotheses: the first being that the behaviors of the startup can be categorized in different dimensions that should cover open innovation activities. Secondly, open innovation's activities should be able to support each of the behavioral dimensions in each phase of the startup's life cycle. Our third hypothesis proposes that a diagnostic tool and a dashboard should be able to support the startup in its growth in open innovation mode. To do this, this research is based on a literature review rich in notions of open innovation, development methods using the principles of open innovation, and what characterizes startups strictly speaking. These notions are linked in an effort of clarifying the contribution of the open innovation to each of the behavioral dimensions, and this, throughout the specific phases of the life cycle to expansion. Based on these latest proposals, a diagnostic tool, which can also serve as a dashboard, has been developed to validate the hypotheses proposed to participants.
It was not possible to prove that the tool in question increased the chances of the startup to go through the expansion phase successfully, however we were able to conduct an evaluation of the dashboard to validate the elements that compose it. We discovered that the elements linked in the tool were relevant and could be a support for startups to integrate the best practices in open innovation in their organization.
