The communications security between electronic devices is an essential parameter. These devices communicate more and more with wireless technologies which have security weaknesses. Some attacks like Evil Ring or Evil Twin could be detected with an accurate and effective mechanism of localization. However a malicious transmitter could compromise the smooth running of the localization by emitting erroneous information. Consequently it is not possible to rely on the transmitter to localize. One of the localization methods is to use reliable receivers which measure the received signal strength (RSS) resulting from the transmitter. Once values have been collected, we can determine the possible positions of the transmitter thanks to a signal propagation model.
In order to improve the existing localization systems, we analyzed several mechanisms and more particularly the Hyperbolic Position Bounding mechanism proposed by Laurendeau and Barbeau (2008).This algorithm uses the method previously described that uses the RSS. We found some incoherencies in this algorithm. We suggest correcting these incoherencies through two mechanisms based on the HPB algorithm. We propose also two other mechanisms of localization. One of them doesn’t use any hypothesis about the emission power. We tested and compared these various mechanisms.
The results of these mechanisms depend on how receivers are placed. We studied this phenomenon and we propose several positions for three to five receivers. These positions were tested with two most efficient algorithms. To compare positions, we based our choice on coverage, error rate, system precision and the number of receiver used.
