Abstract

This document presents in four sections a global approach to implement a coordinated secondary voltage control. Firstly, the power network is partitioned into voltage control areas having few interactions between them. The network partitioning is executed by the objective function optimization method (Blumsack et al. (2009)) using an electrical distance computed by conditional entropy. To evaluate the coupling between voltage control areas, the present paper proposes a new method by calculating an electrical distance between areas. Secondly, the pilot nodes are obtained in every area following their capacity to represent the voltage profile of the area and to be controlled by the neighbour compensation units. From the electrical distance measures, a PAM classification algorithm, or CWN-PAM, selects the pilot nodes based on those criterions. Thirdly, the present paper modifies the coordinated secondary voltage controller proposed by EDF, in Lefebvre et al. (2000), to integrate the shunt impedances of the network in the control process. The results are presented for the IEEE 39 bus and IEEE 118 bus systems, showing the efficiency of the approach. Finally, the global approach to implement a coordinated secondary voltage control is applied on the Hydro-Québec power network, to validate his application to large scale networks.
