The aim of this study is to develop methods in order to measure the thermomechanical properties of martensitic steel. These experimental data will be useful in finite element simulation. 4340 steel is used in this study. This alloy is used in gears and has very interesting mechanical properties. Furthermore it is possible to modify this material with heat treatments.
The Gleeble 3800 is used to test the material. Theoretically, it can reproduce all manufacturing process condition.
With dilatation tests made in this project, exact austenitic and martensitic phase transformations temperatures are obtained. Tensile tests also permit to find the yield stress of 4340 in austenitic domain between 850 and 1100 °C. The effect of work hardening on martensitic start temperature is qualitatively shown. A numerical simulation is made to understand the physics of tests.
