Abstract

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the primary drivers of global climate change. To maintain climate balance and enable adaptation to future changes, reducing emissions and increasing the sequestration of atmospheric carbon are essential. The Sud-Ouest Borough of Montreal is considering implementing emission reduction measures to optimize the circularity of GHG flows and ensure carbon neutrality within its territory. Achieving this objective requires the development of an annual emissions inventory. Existing methodologies applied to small territories often overlook most indirect emissions from residents’ consumption and the carbon sequestration potential of urban trees. This study aims to address these methodological gaps and adapt tools designed for large-scale territories to the scale of the Sud- Ouest Borough. The method developed through this research is applied to the year 2019. It is based on the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories and the Partners for Climate Protection Protocol. A survey questionnaire was distributed to volunteer respondents among households in the Sud-Ouest to collect consumption data. Equations based on canopy indices were used to estimate the annual amount of carbon sequestered by urban trees. A localized quantification methodology was developed to account for neighborhood-specific characteristics, optimizing resource deployment for emission reduction measures. The urban canopy cannot offset anthropogenic GHG emissions at the scale of the Sud-Ouest. The impact of household intrinsic emissions surpasses that of direct emissions. These emissions should systematically be included in quantification efforts. An emission reduction action plan must therefore be developed.
