Structural performance of cold recycled asphalt pavement depends on the changes in water content inside the asphalt’s microstructure. So the real-time monitoring of moisture in a pavement is an important step to improve the mix design of cold recycled asphalt.
Through literature, this paper deals with the properties of cold recycled asphalt pavement and the role of water in their structural resistance. Then, some devices used to measure soil water contents are introduced.
The experimental strategy developped for this project is based on the linking of in-situ measurements and laboratory experiments. To exploit the collected data, three factors that could infleunce the probe response (period) are carefully studied : the water content, the temperature and the porosity.
The experiments bring out that the period measured increases with the water content. A rise which is more significant when the temperature is high. Moreover, the period can be describe as a linear function of the temperature or the porosity.
From the analysis of these results, a calibration model for the probes has been developped. Finally, the application of this model to the data collected in-situ allows a correct measurements of the water content in a cold recycled asphalt.
