This research mastery program focuses on the evaluation of thermomechanical behavior of bitumen and mastic (mixture of bitumen and fillers) in the linear viscoelastic field. This characterisation was realized at the Laboratory of Roads and Bituminous Materials (LCMB) of the “École de technologie supérieure” (ÉTS) in collaboration with the industrial partners“Société des Alcools du Québec” (SAQ) and “Éco Entreprises Québec” (ÉEQ).
The rheological properties of bitumen and mastic were measured with a new device called Annular Shear Rheometer (ASR) under various loading conditions. This machine allows not only to test samples larger than those used in conventional tests, but also to make homogeneous analyses, which gives access to the law of behaviour’s materials.
The tests are performed on a wide range of temperatures and frequencies (from -15 ° C to 45 ° C and 0.03Hz to 10 Hz). The main objective of this study is to compare the behavior of bitumen and mastic in the field of small deformations. The influence of the incorporation of recycled glass particles on the behavior of mastic at low levels of deformations was also studied by comparing the evolution of complex modules shear (G*) of mastic with recycled glass particles and conventional fillers (limestone).
Finally, the analog 2S2P1D model is used to simulate the linear viscoelastic behavior of the bitumen and bituminous mastics tested during the experiments.
