For the past ten years, the implementation of a generic battery model in the Mathworks Simscape Electrical library has been an important tool in the field of energy storage. Over the years, this model has seen several improvements to simulate the effect of aging and temperature of a battery. However, until today, it was up to the user of this model to develop his own charging algorithm. In order to simplify the use of this battery model and to allow users to focus on the development of integrated energy storage systems, it becomes essential to add a generic battery charger model to this library.
The objective of this research project is to propose a model of generic battery charger allowing the recharging of a battery in constant-current, constant-voltage mode. This model must operate using various alternating or direct current power supply. In addition, the model must be able to take ambient temperature into account in order to adjust the recharge output voltage of the batteries.
Finally, in order to verify the operation of the model, it is applied to two commercially available battery chargers. This experimental validation confirms that charger specifications such as charging voltage and current, efficiency, total harmonic distortion, power factor, etc. are respected.
