Abstract

The estimated rental rates for construction equipment has several complexities. The many parameters to consider when estimating the rental rate, the many methods used to calculate each parameter, the difficulty of finding validated data for each input and the impact of different factors are just exemples. Knowing that the rent of construction equipments is an important part of any construction project, a simple improvement of the methods used can have a significant financial impact. The main objective of this research is to develop a calculation method for determining the rental rate as close as possible to reality and to propose a graphical interface. The calculation must be representative of the features found on the construction sites of Hydro-Québec, particularly in terms of type of equipment, climate conditions, field conditions, etc. To do this, a literature review was conducted in order to discover the existing calculation methodologies. This literature review has also compared the publications in terms of theparameters and equations used to estimate the rental rate. Subsequently, each of the parameters and equations were thoroughly analyzed in order to select or propose an optimal solution. The calculation methodology and the graphic interface are validated as they progress. The first validation step is done internally by the research team. Then, the methodology of calculation and the graphical interface is presented and validated by Hydro-Québec. The last step of validation must be done in collaboration with the contractors to ensure that the results obtained with the calculation methodology reflect reality. This paper presents some improvements in the calculation methods, especially new types of use, an adaptation of the terms of lease, consideration of new parameters and elements affecting inputs and improved equations. A prototype has also been developed to implement the proposed improvements.
