People spend about 90% of their time inside buildings. In recent years, the construction of tighter building envelopes, the increase in office equipments and the widespread use of synthetic materials have ensured that the concerns about indoor air quality are increasing. The hospital sector is not immune to the problems of indoor air quality. We find multiple pollution sources and the presence of ill patients. This ensures that this sector is particularly at risk.
This work focuses on modeling the air movements, temperature field and concentration of gaseous contaminants in a bronchoscopy unit. The numerical model is based on the large eddy simulation method (LES). Three ventilation scenarios are studied. The first two scenarios are based on the current condition of ventilation in the room. The third scenario is based on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for a bronchoscopy unit. The results show that different ventilation strategies affect the contaminant concentration in the room. Average concentrations of contaminants ranging from 920 to 1260 ppm are obtained depending on the ventilation scenario. The ventilation efficiency is also compared in terms of index of air quality and the mean age of air concept. Based on these indexes, the scenario based on the CDC recommendations is the one that performs less efficiently.
