Abstract

In thermal power stations, the aging of turbines and their obsolete control systems have a considerable impact on the economic performance of the thermal machine. Consequently, a need for maintenance or modernization in the command and control system is increasingly demanded by producing companies. In order to fill this market, Andritz Hydro Canada Inc is studying the various possibilities of producing electrical energy at low cost in optimizing the different processes of the electrical energy production control systems. The main objective of this research is to model a high-power turboalternator in order to determine the frequency characteristics linking the opening’s degree of the steam actuators and the power injected by the machine into the network. The knowledge of these frequency responses as well as the delays which are present in the system will make it possible to determine the most appropriate control structure for this type of system. The resolution method consists of individually modeling the actuator control system, the actuator, the turbine and the alternator. Then group all the models and link them to an energy production model. Subsequently, to determine the temporal and frequency characteristics of the entire turbo-generator system in order to design the valve controllers for the injection of power into the network according to the valve positions. The analysis of the results showed that the variation of vapors in the extraction outlets is compensated by the controller of the main valve for a turboalternator controlled by a single main valve while for a turboalternator controlled by the three valves, the variation of steam in the extraction outlets is compensated by each valve controller. In addition, the response time of the closed loop system with the controllers on all three valves is longer than that of the closed loop system with a controller on the main valve.
