Abstract

The third phase of the ETS residence halls uses a heating and cooling system composed of several elements exchanging thermal energy with a coolant in order to redistribute it to the halls water and air system. Among these elements, the system saves heat given off by refrigeration devices from the Metro food market located on the first floor of the residence building for energy efficiency purpose. The system also includes a ground heat exchanger which can cool the fluid in summer and heat it in winter. This heat is distributed to the halls thanks to several heat pumps and heat exchangers. Several flow meters and thermometers are located at strategic points in order to monitor the system. The objective of this thesis is to create a model of the heating and cooling system with the simulation software TRNSYS after the analysis of its performances thanks to the data recorded by the sensors. Once this model created, improvements are suggested and simulated in order to evaluate their influence on the energy efficiency of the system. The modelling shows that it is possible to improve the efficiency through changes of the control sequences, which would save energy without needing an investment.
