The improvement of logistics process in hospitals by using and adapting the tools of manufacturing sector is changing. The performance of a hospital depends on the performance of services that constitute itself, in particular the operating room. Resource and process management in the operating room is one of the most important problems to be solved for health managers. Increased demand for quality care for patients and reduced funding are pushing managers to review their process. The release of the clinical staff of logistics tasks has become the main goal especially as nursing resources become increasingly scarce. The case picking is a logistical tasks requiring the most time to clinical staff in the day. The time allocated to this activity is in less time devoted to patient.
The work presented in this paper addresses the optimization process of the case picking in the operating room of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Montréal in order to make it more effective. In this research, we chose to observe the impacts on the delegation of the activity in non-nursing staff, and the use of voice picking. We started by defining the current process and measurement of current performance in three performance indicators; cost, sampling errors and quality of care. These observations allowed us to have our home base in order to subsequently evaluate the possible gains of future improvements. An analysis of the current process and its performance has helped target activities to non-added value to remove. Enhancing solutions were then proposed and implemented such that the delegation of the business to non-nursing staff. Measurements were performed when the non-nursing staff prepared the case with voice and where they’re picking manually. AHP multi-criteria analysis allowed us to assert that the collection of cases by non-nursing is the most efficient process in light of our performance indicators. Finally, we presented the actions taken to maintain the results of improvements made to avoid a possible return to previous habits.
This work allowed us firstly to demonstrate that the methods and tools of continuous improvement from the manufacturing environment can be applied in health facilities. On the other hand, it allowed us to advance research and development of the application of voice picking technology in the health community. Points to consider in its implementation and the gains of this solution compared to a system for picking paper are explained in this study.
