Abstract

Waste generation is actually an environmental pressure. The large available quantity and the numerous way of treatment of organic material are factors that makes it the first target to promote waste recovery. Composting mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of those alternatives on a community scale treatment technology. This process implies the separation of non organic material from mixed MSW to prepare composting operation. A bioreactor initiates the process and realize pre- reatment of MSW which make possible the mechanical separation. Optimization of ventilation, rotation speed and instantly processed weight were proposed as an hypothesis for parameter that could increased equipment performances. A pilot plant was developped to process mixed MSW and evaluate bioreactor performance while variation of the three selected parameters. Results obtained from experiment haven’t lead to rotation speed optimization. However, heated ventilation increases weight losses in 10% proportion. Such improvement have not been observed with ambient ventilation. Bioreactor filled with 230 kg per m3 seems to yield the best performances, which is 16,8% weight loss. Processing time to reach the thermophilic period was 2,4 days, a period 8% shorter than the processing period actually use in the industry. Finally, further investigations could therefore be made to confirm relationship between industrial and pilot scale and to adapt the rotating drum to other treatment technology.
