In the last few years, renewable energy sources have known a big increase in their popularity in order to meet clean energy requirements and policies. Solar production facilities, at a small and large scale, are a major component in order to meet these requirements. However, due to their intermittent nature and their conception which is with power electronics, they modify the dynamics of the power system when integrated in large numbers. This modification of the dynamics may be harmful in some cases as cited in WECC (2018). Fortunately, there are some control strategies that can be implemented in order to mitigate some of these issues and even sometimes help the grid. This Master’s thesis will cover this problematic and will try to shed light on these strategies with the goal to help harmonize the traditional grid with synchronous machines with these new sources of energy.
